What is a Life Cycle Assessment?

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a scientific, standardized methodology that evaluates the environmental impact of a product, service, or organization across all stages of its existence. It analyzes everything from raw material extraction and manufacturing to transport, use, and final treatment at the end of its useful life.

This global approach provides a rigorous environmental profile based on empirical data. By assessing each phase, it prevents greenwashing and ensures that reducing an impact at one specific point does not cause an increase in environmental damage at another stage of the process.

What is the working process?

At Solid Forest we follow a clear, structured methodology in four fundamental phases. This process allows us to accurately calculate the environmental performance of your organization or product and ensure the results are fully reliable:

Phase 1: We determine exactly what will be measured and set the metrics and unit of measure that will be used to analyze your product, service, or corporate activity.
Phase 2: We collect your company’s real information, including energy consumption, raw material use, logistics, and the waste generated.
Phase 3: We enter this data into our specialized software to process the information using scientific methods and obtain accurate environmental indicators.
Phase 4: We deliver a detailed technical document that identifies the critical points of your activity and serves as a direct basis for passing audits or official certifications, or even a specific software tool that enables you to generate your own results.

How long does an LCA study take?

A standard study for a medium-complexity product usually requires between two and four months of technical work. The exact timeframe varies depending on the complexity of the system analyzed and how quickly the company provides its records.

The longest phase is usually collecting the primary data inventory. If the organization has digitized, centralized internal records, execution times are reduced very significantly.

Which regulations and standards do you apply?

We strictly apply international reference standards to ensure all results are comparable, reproducible, and audit-ready. For Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies, we base our work on the guidelines of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Depending on the required environmental indicator or metric, the work aligns with the following standards:

Carbon Footprint: We work under the guidelines of ISO 14064 for organizations, ISO 14067 for products, and the global standards set by the GHG Protocol.
Water Footprint: We use ISO 14046 to determine the water environmental footprint and the methodological criteria of the Water Footprint Network in specific cases.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs): We follow ISO 14025 guidelines and the European standard EN 15804 for the construction sector, working with Type II environmental labeling program operators such as The International EPD System, Instituto Huella Ambiental, or Global EPD, among others.
European Environmental Footprint: We implement the updated EF 3.1 methodologies, as well as the Product Environmental Category Rules (PEFCR) and the Organisation Environmental Category Rules (OEFSR).
Digital Product Passport: We calculate the environmental impacts required by the new European DPP for those products for which regulation already exists.
