An Environmental Product Declaration is a report verified by an independent third party that communicates the environmental profile of a product based on measurable data. Its development is globally standardized by the ISO 14025 standard, which defines the requirements for Type III labels.
Unlike Type I labels (ecolabels based on pass/fail criteria) or Type II labels (environmental self-declarations without external verification), the product EPD does not judge whether an item is “green”. Instead, it presents a complete inventory of objective impacts so that the buyer can compare solutions with informed criteria.
In the field of building and construction, the European standard EN 15804 specifies the product category rules (PCR) necessary to harmonize this calculation. This ensures that any indicator of emissions or consumption can be directly compared between different manufacturers.
