Concrete Carbon Footprint Calculator
In collaboration with Holcim Spain, we developed a web tool for companies in the concrete sector to support them in calculating the carbon footprint of concrete produced using cements manufactured by Holcim.
The tool was conceived from a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach to concrete, with the aim of rigorously evaluating all stages that generate Greenhouse Gas emissions, incorporating everything from the extraction and processing of raw materials to the manufacture and final delivery of the product to the customer, ensuring a complete and coherent view of the total carbon footprint of the concrete placed on site.

The challenges
In addition to creating a tool tailored to non-expert users in the sector that would cover their Carbon Footprint calculation needs, the main challenge of the project was the development of an internal calculator for Holcim that would allow them to accurately calculate the carbon footprint of their cements, based on the Life Cycle Analysis methodology and the certified emissions from their plants. This challenge required the integration of real industrial data with robust calculation models, ensuring the consistency, traceability, and reliability of the results obtained.
The design of the tool prioritizes both usability and technical robustness. It is not only about quantifying emissions, but about offering a solution that actively helps the concrete sector to identify opportunities for improvement and to adopt more sustainable practices in each phase of the construction process.
What we achieved

With the new calculator, we achieved:
Precise and traceable calculations: We implement proven methodologies that allow a detailed analysis of the emissions associated with each stage of the project.
Self-declaration based on reliable data: The tool facilitates the preparation of responsible carbon footprint declarations, supported by transparent and verifiable information.
Regulatory alignment: the Calculator was developed to facilitate compliance with current European legislation and contribute to global decarbonization objectives, actively supporting the fight against climate change.
